Pooping outside litter box
Q: I have 7 year old and 2 year old cats. my 7 year old came from a somewhat neglectful home and will not poop in a dirty litter box. my husband and i have tried scooping the box several times a day and he still poops out side of the box. my 2 year old is constantly spraying out side of the box when he is mad at us. other then these problems they are pretty good cats. i just dont know what to do about the peeing and pooping.
A: Try adding additional litterboxes and using different litter types such as everclean which i have found helpful sometimes. also consider feliaway from 1800petmeds which can sometimes act as deterrant and make sure cleaning soiled areas with nonammonia based product such as natures miracle

Ear mites
Q: I just got a pug/beagle mix puppy who is 2 1/2 months old. she was diagnosed with ear mites and has received one treatment of acarexx. we also have another dog in the house, a 2 year old black lab/sharpee mix, who frequently plays with the puppy. as of now she does not show the same blackish- grainy discharge typical of ear mites. what are the chances she could catch it and can she still catch it after the ppuppy has received her first treatment? also, are ear mites communicable to humans, and if so what is the risk? thanks!
A: Not communciable to humans. also not likely other dog has problem if pup was treated once with that product

Cds
Q: My dog is 16 years old and has cds. she was put on selegiline for a while but we just didn't see any improvement. my vet said there was nothing else that would help. can you sugest something that is not a prescription that can help with the symptoms? she was on a diet that was ment for cds (science diet food) that was suppose to help improve her symptoms but she would not eat it. she also has lost alot of weight. i'm told to have her on a low protein diet but i feel like i need to change it. her spine is really starting to show. she also has a hard time finding the food bowl and when you feed her by hand it is a battle as well. if you have any suggestions that i can do without going over my vets head, i would apreciate it. maybe some vitamins or even something herbal.
A: You could try an herbal product known as senior blend, which contains some western herbs like ginkgo which sometimes can help. it is available from company known as animal apothacary which you can likely find on line somehow. also consider extra antioxidant vitamins like |e at 400iu daily as well as ester c at dose of 1000 mg twice daily. also consider supplement known as bovine colostrum from company known as prosymbiotics and add 1/3 tea of broad spectrum powder from of this company's product per 25 pounds of body weight daily to her food. i have found this product quite helpful

Q: I lost my cat to old age several months ago. i have three doses of frontline for cats. the package says not to use on dogs. may i ask why. i have a 20lb dog and a 50 lb dog. i hate for these to go to waste. they are to expensive to go to waste. if i could use these it would help me greatly as i am on a very tight budget. thank you, terri
A: Sorry we cannot advise using a product in a manner not dictated by the package labeling.

I can't identify them
Q: Recently my male cat has lost a lot of weight, and today i saw a short white worm hanging from his tail that was about the length of my pinky nail. i've looked all over and can't figure out what it is. what is it and what should i use to treat it?
A: You could bring a stool sample to your veterinarian for a positive id of the type of worm. you can also use a broad spectrum wormer such as panacur-c. this product is given once a day, based on the weight of the pet, for 3 consecutive days.

Frontline
Q: I didn't use all the frontline last year how long is it good for beyond expiration date?
A: Medications do not suddenly cease to work once they reach their expiration date. rather, the expiration date is the date beyond which the medicine begins to loose effectiveness and there can be no guarantee that the product will work as expected. as a pharmacist, i have to advise you that no medicine should be used beyond it's expiration date because of this potential lack of effectiveness..

Flies biting dog's ears
Q: I have a percription called "expar" which i think is a topical liquid. it smells and appears to be oily. could i use this on my dog's ears? the flies are biting them and they are getting sores and scabby.
A: The product expar is recommended for use on cattle and therefore we cannot suggest that you use it on a dog's ear.
