Vitamin c; ester cQ: In one of your answers you recommended that the dog be given 1000 i.u. of vit c twice a day. i had always been advised to give only 1000 i.u. of vit c per day. is giving 2000 i.u. per day better? also, is ester c the same as any other vitamin c? what is the advantage of the better c product? thank you. A: It is actually in mg not iu with vitamin c. also ester c is non acidic form of vitamin c and usually better on stomach. if your pet can tolorate 2000 mg per day of ester c then that is better. only side effect with vitamin c is diarrhea.

CdsQ: My dog is 16 years old and has cds. she was put on selegiline for a while but we just didn't see any improvement. my vet said there was nothing else that would help. can you sugest something that is not a prescription that can help with the symptoms? she was on a diet that was ment for cds (science diet food) that was suppose to help improve her symptoms but she would not eat it. she also has lost alot of weight. i'm told to have her on a low protein diet but i feel like i need to change it. her spine is really starting to show. she also has a hard time finding the food bowl and when you feed her by hand it is a battle as well. if you have any suggestions that i can do without going over my vets head, i would apreciate it. maybe some vitamins or even something herbal. A: You could try an herbal product known as senior blend, which contains some western herbs like ginkgo which sometimes can help. it is available from company known as animal apothacary which you can likely find on line somehow. also consider extra antioxidant vitamins like |e at 400iu daily as well as ester c at dose of 1000 mg twice daily. also consider supplement known as bovine colostrum from company known as prosymbiotics and add 1/3 tea of broad spectrum powder from of this company's product per 25 pounds of body weight daily to her food. i have found this product quite helpful

Red odoriferous ear and vomitingQ: My 5 mo. golden pup had a really red ear with dark spots on it and a bad odor. i started cleaning it with alcohol and treating it with nystatin/neo/etc... which cleared up the ear problem. this similar ear problem occurs frequently in my 12 year old golden, and i always use the nystatin. is this correct, or should i be using something else? i've seen lots of products on here and i don't know what the ear problem is exactly, but the nystatin and alcohol seems to work. also, my 12 year old retriever never gets sick with the ear infections, but my puppy vomited for 12 hours. could this possibly be correlated to the red, odoriferous ear? thank you so much!
